If you're trying to assess whether a raptor is a male or female, you'll first want to identify which species you're observing. Kestrels, barn owls, snowy owls, and northern harriers are some species that display a color difference between males and females... Males and females of most raptor species look exactly the same, color-wise. Generally speaking-- size matters. Male raptors tend to be roughly 1\/3 the size of the females, but it can be hard to sex wild birds unless there's a male and female perched near each other.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you're a REAL BIRD FREAK and spend a lot of time observing a lot of different raptors, you can pick up on other traits that distinguish females from males. The harris' hawk this design is modeled after is a female-- I know this because I worked with her in educational programs, BUT ALSO: she has a thick, blocky head. Male harris' hawk heads are narrower.
